Your Guide to WATA 2023 The 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium

2023 is a continuing education reporting year to the Board of Certification and there are 15.5 continuing education hours offered by the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association at the 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium April 23rd - April 25th, 2023. 

The 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium is in Stevens Point, WI at the Holiday Inn Convention Center. The symposium is presenting continuing education topics about anatomy, advocacy and advancement, current trends, empowerment, nutrition, and sports. There are two hands-on learning workshops for athletic trainers to participate in. The featured speakers include medical doctors and orthopedic specialists, athletic trainers from the University of Wisconsin Badgers Athletics and Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, and more. 

 

 

Anatomy

Athletic trainers will learn about evidence-based evaluation and rehabilitation. 
It is important for athletic trainers to maintain best practices for their patients.

At least four areas of the body are being presented at the WATA Symposium.
The shoulder, knee, skin, and the nervous system.

Five different presentations will be offered on various anatomy.

“Neurodynamics in Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation”

Kurrel Fabian, DAT, LAT, CSCS is presenting a hands-on learning workshop on the topic of neurodynamics.
Kurrel Fabian is an Athletic Trainer for the University of Wisconsin Badgers Athletics. 

 

Monday April 24th, 2023

 

“Evaluation of the Shoulder: Learning from the Pros”

Will George, MS, LAT is presenting on the shoulder during the general sessions.  He is also presenting the hands-on learning workshop on Sunday on the topic of pitching mechanics. Will George, MS, LAT is a clinical athletic trainer at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin.  His speaker experience includes MCW Sports Medicine Symposiums, and the NATA clinical symposium. 

 

“Just Scratching the Surface: Common Athletic Skin Concerns”

Ryan Berns, MD is presenting on the topic of skin conditions. Ryan Berns, MD, MPH is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician at Bellin Health. He is an author of peer-reviewed journal articles, poster presenter at the AMSSM annual meeting, and speaker at the MPH Symposium in Madison, WI. 

 

Tuesday April 25th, 2023

 

“Dislocations and Reductions: Evidence-Based Practice”

Jim DeWeerd, MD and Holly Schmies, PhD, LAT are presenting on the topic of joint dislocations. Dr. Jim DeWeerd is an orthopedist in Stevens Point, WI.  Holly Schmies, PhD, LAT is an Associate Professor and MAST Program Director at University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.  She is the WATA Continuing Education Committee Chair, and an experienced speaker and presenter. 

 

“Updates in ACL Surgery and Treatment”

James Prosser, DO is presenting on the topic of ACL Surgery. Dr. Prosser is an orthopedic surgery specialist in Madison, WI. 

 

 

 

Advocacy and Advancement

 

It is important for athletic trainers to discuss changes in the AT Practice Act and updates in reimbursement. Advocacy and Advancement topics help athletic trainers discuss the business of athletic training. 

Two topics will be presented about Advocacy and Advancement.

 

 

Monday April 24th, 2023

 

“Keeping Up with the Changes: Updates in Reimbursement and Practice Act”

OrthoVise, the Reimbursement Committee, and the Affiliated Credentialing Board will be presenting the topic of the Practice Act updates.

 

OrthoVise is a specialized orthopedic practice advisory company helping clients improve how orthopedic care is delivered through athletic training utilization. OrthoVise owner and CEO Joe Greene, is the NATA Third Party Reimbursement Initiative Project Facilitator and is Chair of the Reimbursement Committee for the WATA.

 

The Affiliated Credentialing Board is made up of AT’s, a physician, and a public member for the State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. 

 

 

Tuesday April 25th, 2023

 

“Starting and Running Your Own Cash Based Practice”

Trevor Folker, MS, LAT will be presenting on the topic of athletic training business.
Trevor Folker, MS, LAT is the Owner and Lead Clinician at MVMT Performance & Rehabilitation in Green Bay, WI.

 

 

 

Current Trends

 

This topic is important for athletic trainers to learn for a better understanding of the benefits and risks of cutting-edge therapy for musculoskeletal pain. It is important for athletic trainers to be able to discuss wearable technology with their patients.

“Use of Biologics and Proinflammatory Agents in Sports Medicine”

Mark Niedfeldt MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Departments of Family & Community Medicine and Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Niedfeldt created a solo practice where he works with active individuals seeking musculoskeletal treatments. 

 

 

Tuesday April 25th, 2023

 

“Considerations for Incorporating Wearable Technology in Athletic Training”

Kyle Ebersole, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Technology, College of Health Sciences, at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He is a Sport Science Consultant, in the Performance Science Department for the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. His speaker experience includes the National Association for Occupational Health Professions conference, the US Olympic & Paralympic Sports Med Committee, and more.  

 

Empowerment

 

Empowerment can be described as inspiration that moves a person to do something.

Empowerment can help athletic trainers discuss their self-worth. It can help athletic trainers play a motivating role for their patients. 

 

Two topics about empowerment will be presented. Both presentations related to empowerment will be held during the general sessions on

“Psyche of the Modern Athlete: Where ATs Play a Role and Techniques to Employ”

Aaron Bestul, MS, LAT is a secondary school athletic trainer at Aspirus Sports Medicine in Stevens Point, WI.  He is also the WI representative to GLATA’s CECAT. Bestul’s speaker experience includes the GLATA symposium.

 

 

“Be Your Best Self: Cultivating Self-Advocacy and Professional Presence”

Lyna Matesi, PhD is presenting on the topic of Self- Advocacy. Lyna Matesi, PhD is an Associate Professor and MBA Director at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point.  Dr. Matesi’s PhD is in Leadership Studies. Dr. Matesi is a change leader, facilitator, and educator to help maximize success. 




Nutrition 

 

The topics on Nutrition are important to ensure athletic trainers are applying best practice during the management of a patient’s diagnosis.   The topics about Nutrition will help athletic trainers implement nutritional planning for their patients. 

 

There will be two presentations related to nutrition.

“The Importance of Nutrition in Post-Concussion Recovery”

Jamie Krzykowski, PhD, LAT, CISSN, TCN is presenting on the topic of nutrition in concussion recovery.  Dr. Krzykowski is a Clinical Associate Professor at Carroll University.  She earned her PhD in Holistic Nutrition, a certified sport nutrition certification, and a therapeutic nutrition counselor certification. Dr. Krzykowski is an experienced speaker on the topic of Nutrition. 

 

 

“Diabetes in Sports: How the AT Can Help with Management”

Lee Hykras, RD, CDCES, and Roland Schmidt, LAT are presenting on the topic of diabetes in sports.

 

Lee Hykras, RD is a Performance Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at Bellin Health. His speaker experiences include USA Youth Hockey, USA Football, and WATA symposiums. 

 

Roland Schmidt, LAT is a clinical outreach athletic trainer at Bellin Health Sports Medicine. Schmidt’s speaker experience includes NATA clinical symposiums, a WFATT Convention, GLATA symposiums, and WATA symposiums. 

 

 

 

Sports

Sport-related topics are important for athletic trainers to learn. Athletic trainers will be able to discuss injury risk associated with youth football. Athletic trainers will also be able to discuss the basics of pitching mechanics and identify predictors of injury. 

 

At least three sports are being covered at the WATA Symposium. Even though the topic of skin conditions does not specifically relate to a single sport, it can be applied to any contact sport.

“Pitching Mechanics:  Understanding Early Predictors to Injury and Navigating the Rehabilitation Process”

 

Will George, MS, LAT is presenting a hands-on learning workshop on pitching mechanics. Will George, MS, LAT is a clinical athletic trainer at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin. His speaker experience includes MCW Sports Medicine Symposiums, and the NATA clinical symposium.

“The Effect of Youth Football on Future Injury and Perceived Success”

 

Adam Pfaller, MD is presenting on the topic of youth football. Adam Pfaller, MD is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics at UW Health in Madison, WI. He is an author for manuscripts published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and numerous poster and oral presentations including the AMSSM Annual Meeting.

 

 

 

 

Free Communications

Free communications are presented on Monday April 24th, 2023

Joining Forces: Effective Collaboration between ROTC and AT Program will be presented by Hayley Erickson, PhD, ATC

Inter-Limb Asymmetry in Lower Body Strength Among Firefighters will be presented by Joel Luedke, MS, ATC, CSCS

 

 

 

 

 

 

Register for the 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium in Stevens Point!

 

The 15.5 continuing education hours presented at the 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium will help athletic trainers reach the 50 hours to be reported to the Board of Certification by December 31st, 2023. 

 

The 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium offers more value than 15.5 continuing education hours.  The event celebrates six award winners at the Hall of Fame and Awards reception on Sunday evening. Free Communication Sessions will be presented on Monday.  There are breaks in the programming to explore products at the exhibitor hall, see prizes at the Founding Fathers raffle, and enjoy lunch. Poster presentations will be on display during the Jeff Oliphant Memorial Research Reception on Monday evening.  Enjoy appetizers and drinks during the PAC Fundraiser* on Monday night at the Amber Grille inside the Holiday Inn Convention Center.  All attendees can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet during the Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday morning. New to the event this year is the featured Job Fair on Tuesday morning.
