WATA's Guide to GLATA 2023

The Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association has put together a guide to help you narrow down all the presenters from Wisconsin at the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting and Symposium in Wheeling, IL, March 9th - 11th to make it easy for you to find your peers and grow your network.

 

Oral Free Communications

Oral Free Communications are presentations that are 8 minutes long with 2 minutes for Q & A. Since the presentations are short, the entire session may last up to two or three hours. You have the chance to hear about fifteen presenters talk about a wide variety of topics. 

 

Wisconsin will have a total of 9 familiar faces presenting topics at the Oral Free Communication sessions. There are two separate Oral Free Communication sessions. 

 

The first session begins on Thursday March 9th, at 9:00am.  The second session is Friday March 10th, at 9:30am.   Both sessions are held in the Botanic Ballroom.

 

Hot topics in Wisconsin like Concussion Education, Running, Sport Specialization, Strength Among Firefighters, and ALCR will be presented at the Oral Free Communication sessions.

 

Come hear from leaders like Andrew Winterstein, PhD, ATC, Erin Lally, ATC, Kevin Biese, PhD, ATC, Joel Luedke, MS, ATC, Emily Sygler, ATC, Kyle Petit, PhD, ATC, Stephanie Adler, MS, ATC, Rachel Kleis, PhD, ATC and Madison Sehmer, MAT, ATC.

 

General Sessions

General sessions are one- or two-hour long presentations that make up the bulk of the symposium programming. 

 

Wisconsin will have two colleagues presenting during the GLATA general sessions. 

 

Thursday March 9th at 3:00pm Wisconsin AT Aaron Bestul, LAT, ATC is presenting in the Ravinia Ballroom. 

Bestul is a Wisconsin representative to GLATA’s CECAT and a secondary school athletic trainer.  His presentation is a feature of the GLATA CECAT, called “Psyche of the Modern Athlete: Where Athletic Trainers Play a Role and Techniques to Employ”.

 

Friday March 10th, at 9:00am Wisconsin colleague Kemery Sigmund, PhD, ATC is presenting in the Ravinia Ballroom.  

 

Sigmund is an Assistant Professor at Concordia University in the Department of Health and Human Performance. Her list of 2022 presentations given include an Oral Free Communication at GLATA and a general session on Patellofemoral Pain at our WATA symposium. 

 

Her presentation on Friday is called “Should Pain Be Your Guide? Clinical-Reasoning Guided by Theory & Biopsychosocial Factors.” 

 

CECAT

GLATA’s CECAT stands for Council for Early Career Athletic Trainers. The Council offers education, mentorship and networking opportunities for Athletic Trainers who are early into their careers.   

 

The council organizes GLATA’s Quiz Bowl, the CECAT general sessions, and the CECAT Free Communication Poster Session.

 

Thursday March 9th at 4:00pm Wisconsin will have an author featured in the CECAT Free Communication Poster Session. Mentored by David Bell PhD, ATC, Poster Author Willa Olson from UW-Madison will be in the Botanic Ballroom with her poster presented.

 

Meetings and Presentations

 

The GLATA Business Meeting

 

Thursday March 9th, at 5:00pm the GLATA Business Meeting will be held in the Ravinia Ballroom. Our Vice President, Robert Sipes, EdD, ATC joins the GLATA Executive Board as our Wisconsin Representative.  The business meeting is led by GLATA President, Amy Hamilton, MA, LAT.  Announcements from the NATA are given by the District Directors, Ryan Wilkinson of District XI and Craig Voll of District IV.  Also, during the business meeting scholarship and grant winners are announced and the President’s Excellence Awards are given out. 

 

Awards Presentation

 

David Bell, PhD, ATC is among the recipients of the President’s Excellence Awards this year.  The award is chosen by GLATA President, Amy Hamilton.  David Bell, PhD, ATC is the Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Orthopedics, and Rehabilitation at UW- Madison. He also currently serves as the GLATA Research Assistance Committee Coordinator.

 

The WATA State Meeting

 

Friday March 10th at 8:00am the WATA State Meeting will be held in the Birch Room. The meeting is led by WATA President Keith Owsley, MS, LAT.  VP, Rob Sipes gives some updates relating to WATA from GLATA.  Appearances from the NATA District Directors and GLATA Executive Board may be seen during the WATA Business meeting, as well. 

 

All NATA members are welcome to attend the business meetings. Pro-tip: keep your business cards handy!

 

Wisconsin presenters will be featured at free communication sessions, general sessions, and GLATA meetings and presentations at the 2023 GLATA Annual Meeting and Symposium in Wheeling, IL this week.

 

If you are not able to attend the GLATA Annual Meeting and Symposium, we have a great program planned for Wisconsin athletic trainers in April. 

 

The WATA 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium is April 23rd - 25th, 2023 in Stevens Point, WI and registration is now open. 

 

Our 48th Annual Meeting and Symposium in April will feature hands-on learning workshops, general sessions, awards, and research receptions, PAC Fundraiser Social, and more! The food is always on point at our Annual Meetings, too, in case you were wondering.
