Day 1 Recap at WATA 2023

The Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association kicked off the 2023 Annual Meeting and Symposium in Stevens Point, WI on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023.
Sunday afternoon April 23rd, 2023, educational programming featured two hands-on learning workshops. A total of 4 CEUS, 2 for each workshop were available to earn.
Kurrel Fabian, DAT, LAT presented “Neurodynamics in Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation”. Kurrel Fabian is an athletic trainer with football with the University of Wisconsin Badgers. He graduated with his Doctorate in Athletic Training from University of Idaho.
Will George, MS, LAT presented “Pitching Mechanics: Understanding early predictors in injury and navigating the rehabilitation process”. Will George is currently a Physician's Practice Athletic Trainer at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He got his Masters in Sports Administration from Valparaiso University. He spent 4 years working in D1 baseball at UW-Milwaukee and Valparaiso University.

On Sunday evening, April 23rd, 2023, inside the banquet hall of the Holiday Inn Convention Center, the Awards and Scholarship Chair Anna Linstedt, MS, LAT led the Annual Awards Reception.
The banquet hall provided a casual atmosphere at the awards reception. A cash bar was available for beverages. Complimentary appetizers included cheese and crackers, fruit, southwest pinwheels, beef canape, and veggie trays.
In the shape of Wisconsin, an 8”x11” plaque was given to award winners. All the award winners were present at the reception to receive their awards. Nominators introduced award winners.
Hall of Fame, Distinguished Service, and Outstanding Educator were awarded during the reception on April 23rd, 2023.
Two members were inducted into the Hall of Fame, Roger Caplinger, MS, LAT, ATC and Mark Husen LAT, ATC.
Roger Caplinger was nominated by friend and peer, Keith Owsley. Roger Caplinger is inducted into the Hall of Fame for developing comprehensive medical operations at the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club and extending his development of COVID-19 procedures within the MLB, his generous contributions to the activities of the WATA, and mentoring aspiring athletic training students.
WATA Hall of Famer and Colleague James Popp nominated Mark Husen. Mark Husen is inducted into the Hall of Fame for his contributions to advancing the profession through third party reimbursement and the physician extender setting in Wisconsin, his role on NATA’s and GLATA’s COPA committee, and his positive impacts through servant leadership.
Two members were awarded Distinguished Service Awards, Anna Linstedt, LAT, ATC and Jodi Waltenberg, MS, LAT, ATC.
Anna Linstedt was nominated by the WATA Board of Directors for her presidential leadership during the pandemic and many other contributions to the WATA and the profession.
Jodi Waltenberg was nominated by Alicia Belant, DAT, LAT, ATC for her contributions to the profession as an approved clinical instructor, mentor, colleague, and friend.

Two members were awarded Outstanding Educator Awards, Keith Owsley, MS, LAT, ATC and Renee Reckelberg MS, ATC.
Keith Owsley was nominated by friend, colleague, and Program Director - Athletic Training Education at Marquette University Christopher Geiser, MS, PT, LAT, ATC.
Renee Reckelberg was nominated for the Outstanding Educator award by her colleague of 15 years from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Jennifer Earl-Boehm, PhD, ATC.
