Wrightstown Athletic Director Craig Haese awards a Wisconsin Athletic Service Award to Roland Schmidt on December 10th, 2021, for his service to Wrightstown High School Students.
The Wisconsin Athletic Service Award is an award given on behalf of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association. The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the school's athletic program through their service.
Roland Schmidt is Wrightstown High Schools’ Licensed Athletic Trainer employed with Bellin Health.
In a recent survey (Lacy, 2021) “96% of athletic directors consider the Athletic Trainer a trusted source of medical information.”.
Roland says “trust” is one important quality that athletic directors value about athletic trainers.
Beyond a trusted source of medical information, Roland says “Athletic Directors can see us as part of their team. Athletic trainers can be a part of their administrative team, their coaching team, their leadership team, and be a positive role model for their student athletes.”
As described in the Athletic Administrators Code of Ethics, athletic directors “consider the health and well-being of the entire student body as fundamental in all decisions and actions”. In addition to doing the normal day to day things that athletic trainers do, Roland discussed what makes athletic trainers so valuable to an Athletic Directors team.
“We know our athletes so well, outside of the medical condition. We can take that care to a different level. I think athletic directors, coaches, parents, and athletes see that.”
“We are able to notice, and even assist, athletes that are facing mental health challenges. When athletes are disqualified from taking part in sports due to a medical diagnosis or repeat injuries, many athletes struggle mentally.”
Recently, Roland was able to connect one of these athletes with the non-profit group Sidelined USA, who sent his athlete a small care package to help them face these new obstacles in their life.
Athletic trainers become mentors, role models, and life-long advocates for many of their student athletes.
“Athletic Directors recognize those things and I think that is where the service award becomes meaningful”, Roland said.
Wrightstown Athletic Director wrote “Thank you for everything you do for our students and Wrightstown. Congratulations on your Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association Service Award. You deserve it. Go Tigers!” on Twitter.
